Our graduation rate for the Class of 2018 is 81.1%, up from 78.8% in 2017. Graduation rates have risen for five consecutive years, from 62.3% in 2013.

This achievement comes as Highline students are taking and passing more challenging high school coursework than ever before. In the 2017-18 school year, the number of students scoring a three or higher on one or more Advanced Placement (AP) exams was up 11.5% over the previous year. Students scoring a three or higher on at least one International Baccalaureate (IB) exam increased by nearly 27%.

Students of color are making the greatest gains.

“Everyone in Highline has reason to be proud of our rising graduation rate, as it reflects the exceptional work of our students and staff and the tremendous support of our families and community-based organizations. While we still have much work ahead, surpassing the 80% mark is a significant milestone and cause for celebration,” said Superintendent Susan Enfield.

We achieved these gains through a number of strategies:

  • Knowing every student by name, strength and need and responding to each individual with appropriate instruction and support
  • Increasing career-connected learning, where students get real-world workplace experiences
  • Success deans who track individuals and groups of students, using data to analyze and respond to their needs
  • Focusing on standards-based instruction and holding all students to high expectations for mastering state learning standards
  • Focusing on the social and emotional wellbeing of students and teaching students how to manage their feelings and behavior
  • Tracking every student who has withdrawn from school to find out if they are enrolled in another school or program

We will celebrate our rising graduation rate at the annual State of Our Schools event on Tuesday, November 13 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. All are invited to join. RSVP to State of Our Schools online.
