Superintendent Message: Welcome to a New School Year

Superintendent Message: Welcome to a New School Year

Welcome to the 2018-19 school year! It is always a joy for us to welcome new and returning students, staff and families to Highline. As we begin our year together, I want to share with you some of the exciting changes that are underway across the district.

First, we launched our new website, which is designed to be easier for all to navigate, including those with disabilities. Our investment in our website with state-of-the-art accessibility tools reflects our deep commitment to equity, reflected in our district’s equity policy.

Second, we have officially unveiled our refreshed strategic plan. This updated plan honors the work our staff and community did in developing the original plan in 2013, and also incorporates what we have learned over time, as well as feedback gathered last year from across the district. As always, our Highline Promise remains at the heart of our work: to know every student by name, strength and need so they graduate prepared for the future they choose.

Third, we changed our high school start times so that our students begin thirty minutes later each morning. We did this in response to what research tells us adolescents need, and because we heard loud and clear from students, staff and families what a big difference this would make in our students’ health, well-being and success in school.

One thing that has not changed: the talent and dedication of our Highline staff. They are simply the best. Those who choose to work in public schools can have an infinite impact on the lives of our children. This year, I invite you to join me in using #InfiniteImpact on social media to recognize our Highline staff for the amazing work they do each day.

It continues to be my great joy and honor to work alongside our students and staff and serve as your superintendent. I look forward to seeing and hearing from you as we begin a new school year.
