Supporting Gender Non-Conforming Students

Supporting Gender Non-Conforming Students

The following message was sent by Superintendent Susan Enfield to Staff and Families.

Good Afternoon,

Our promise is to know every student by name, strength and need. Our strategic plan is founded on equity so all students have an equal chance of success. To ensure that all students are known and successful, it is our responsibility as adults is to make sure that all students are welcomed and valued. This includes the students we serve who are transgender, gender non-binary and gender non-conforming.

A recent Trump administration memo revealed that the Department of Health and Human Services is considering defining gender solely based on the gender assigned at birth. We want to be clear that this change if adopted, will not change our commitment to knowing and supporting every child in our diverse student body.

We are dedicated to creating school communities where all students are welcomed and their differences are celebrated. As School Board Policy 3211 states, “The Highline School Board believes in fostering an educational environment that is safe and free of discrimination for all students, regardless of sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression.”

I have heard from families and staff who are concerned that a change in gender definition will compromise the safety and well-being of some of our most vulnerable students. The Highline School Board and I stand with our students, staff, and families of all gender identities and will continue to champion equity through inclusive policies and practices.

As I have said many times, our diversity is an asset, and each of our students is brilliant, beautiful, and brimming with promise. Every one.

Susan
