Understand School Safety Actions

Understand School Safety Actions

When something happens at school—big or small—students need to know what to do. Families do too.

Starting April 14, we will implement a new emergency response plan called the Standard Response Protocol (SRP) to enhance safety, security and communication during emergencies. The new plan uses easy-to-understand language and simple steps to follow, depending on the situation.

This system has five actions:

  • Hold – Stay in the classroom and clear the halls.
  • Secure – Get inside, lock outside doors.
  • Lockdown – Locks, lights, out of sight.
  • Evacuate – Leave the building and go to an announced location.
  • Shelter – Take cover based on the hazard (like an earthquake or tornado).

We no longer use the term “Modified Lockdown,” which was easily confused with a full lockdown. In the new protocol, we use either Hold or Secure, depending on the situation.

Watch this student training video created by the “I Love U Guys” Foundation. A student and school resource officer explain what students should do and how to stay safe in different situations.
