Language Learning

The Language Learning Department supports schools in designing and implementing instructional programs to develop language skills. Whether a native-English speaker, or a speaker of one of the 100+ other languages in the community, our goal is to support each student in becoming English proficient and excel with full literacy skills in two or more languages. To do this, we support the following programs in Highline.

Dual Language

Students in our dual language programs receive 50% of their instruction in English and 50% in Spanish or Vietnamese. The program includes native speakers of English, Spanish, Vietnamese and many other languages.

Dual Language

Native Student Literacy

The Native Student Literacy program supports and provides equitable access to high quality, culturally responsive language and literacy learning opportunities for American Indian/Alaska Native students in grades kindergarten through 8th.

Native Student Literacy

English Language Learners

Students in our ELL program receive support in their English language skills and are ensured access to grade level academic content.  Students qualify for ELL services until they reach a high level of English.

World Language

Students in world language courses develop proficiency in a language other than English, while studying the products, practices and perspectives of the target culture. Students develop their communication skills through reading, writing, speaking and listening.
